The Mraconia Monastery

The Mraconia monastery known as The Underwater Monastery is located near the Boilers, part of the Danube Gorg . The place where it is located is called the Valley of Mraconia, having the secret meaning of dark waters. Since its construction began in 1523 until today, Mraconia Monastery has undergone a series of transformations to its current form and location.

The ruins have been swallowed by the Danube following the construction of the Iron Gates first hydroelectric, for which it was been called by locals “the monastery under water”.

The ruins may be visible when the Danube greatly decreases which gives more mystery and more tourist value.
